A tyre dealer in Monmouth, South Wales, is supporting the future of farming with donations to its local young farmers club.

Paul Jarrold Tyres – based on Wonastow Road Industrial Estate and part of Michelin’s Exelagri network of farm tyre specialists – began supporting Gwent Young Farmers’ Clubs almost three years ago, contributing towards the cost of the organisation’s new clubhouse. Since then the company has continued to look for opportunities to lend its support and for the past year has given £50 per month.

Gwent Young Farmers’ Clubs runs activities in the community for young people aged between 10 and 26.

In addition to the monthly contributions, the dealer has created a new initiative using a fund Michelin provides to its Exelagri dealers to help promote professionalism and business development. As part of the scheme, Paul Jarrold Tyres donates a percentage of all Michelin and Kleber agricultural tyre sales to Gwent Young Farmers’ Clubs. So far the initiative has raised £1,500.

The money will be put towards a training fund set up by Gwent Young Farmers’ Clubs, which helps young people learn new skills through courses on subjects including first aid, drystone walling and trailer operator procedures.

Mike Jarrold, Managing Director, Paul Jarrold Tyres, says: “We were looking for a local organisation to get behind as a business and Gwent Young Farmers’ Clubs was the perfect candidate.

“The organisers work hard to help young people in agricultural communities access skills and training which aren’t necessarily covered by traditional schools and colleges. With the farming sector being such a key part of our business, we wanted to put something back into the community. Indeed, many of the older club members are tomorrow’s farmers.”

Paul Jarrold Tyres joined the Michelin Exelagri programme in 2008, passing a 48-point quality audit, carried out independently, which analyses every aspect of the business, from the levels of staff training to the cleanliness of the workshop.

Serving a mix of arable, livestock and contract farmers within a 25 mile radius of its base, Paul Jarrold Tyres has the ability to fit both on-site and in the field, with full 24/7 breakdown support for its agricultural customers.
